We can still win World T20: Starc

Australia are adamant they can recover from their early World Twenty20 loss to Pakistan to take home the elusive silverware for the first time, according to strike bowler Mitchell Starc.

Heading into Friday’s clash with the West Indies in Dhaka, the Australians are keenly aware that a loss will almost certainly knock them out of the tournament but that hasn’t shaken the confidence of the group.

Sloppy fielding and their inability to close out the game from a winning position set up by batsmen Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch prompted Starc to admit his team was “outplayed in all aspects” by Pakistan.

But he believes Australia have the skills to take down anyone in this format – starting with defending champions the Windies, and followed by T20 powerhouse India on Sunday.

“Definitely we can still win the tournament,” Starc told AAP.

“We obviously got outplayed in all aspects apart from the Finch-Maxwell partnership – we weren’t where we wanted to be.

“But we know if we play to our abilities we’ll beat anyone in this tournament in these conditions.”

For Australia, the equation is simple.

“Every game is must win now,” Starc said. “It’s a grand final every time we walk onto that field and it starts against the West Indies.”

Starc watched with interest the West Indies’ first two clashes – a loss to India and comprehensive victory over Bangladesh – in the hope of unearthing a secret or two about how to chip away at their T20 crown.

“We paid close attention to their game against Bangladesh, and to their loss to India as well, to find out little things they have in their game and things we can use against them in these conditions,” he said.
